Not usually, but it's dependent on the show. Certain shows can dictate the level of security they require.

When I was there about a year ago they were using hand held metal detectors at the door. Haven't been since then though.

I’ve seen some things saying that handheld detectors have been used in the past. Does anyone know if this is still the case? We are going to the CS Lewis show this evening. My daughter is concerned that her knife will be taken!

The PAC as a rule does not use metal detectors BUT as I said before, the contract with the show will dictate the level of security. Big show = liberal policy usually, so just keep that in mind. Smaller show = less likely.
