[QUOTE="nofearfactor, post: 2885461, member: 1535"] I was born and raised in San Diego but moved to the cooler temps of the bay area for a few years and now have lived in the even cooler northern CA mountains the last 25 years. I have solar screens on all of the windows- tons of windows, up in nor CA and with those awesome mountain breezes most times I dont even have to run the several window units we use up there, during the day with shades down it stays a constant 76 or so in the home no matter what it is outside. Its heated by a wood pellet stove in winter so the temps vary. Been living the other part of my time in NE OK for the last 13 years. Here at the house in OK its usually on 74 during the day and the program changes it to 75 at 9pm- depending on the heat, but thats the usual. Winter its usually on 72 during the day then changes to 73 in the evening and 74 later in the night then back to 72 in the morning. Summers the wife likes it really cold while she sleeps so we have a window unit in her room that so she can get her room down to her preferred sleeping temp of 71 without freezing the rest of us out- meaning me and the 2 dogs. I have excellant insulation, a newish roof, good attic venting, updated central units with higher Seer per sq ft than I needed several years ago along with a new heater system and hot water tank, all nat gas- even my back up generator runs on nat gas, I do all regular maintenance on my units in spring myself plus I keep ducts cleaned out, etc etc (I did some HVAC in a smoke and water damage company I owned back in CA years ago). I put in programmable thermostats myself years ago and theyre still working great. My bills run from about $55(elec) $75(nat gas) in winter to about $100-125(elec) $40(gas) in summer in an approx 2500 sq ft house (22x22 garage), on one level.
