Hey all,

Question, my brother has a pair of civil war era swords that he got appraised back in the 90's, but he lost the paperwork on them. Currently he is looking for someplace to re-appraise & possibly buy them. Any suggestions on where to take them?

Thanks in advance.

These are the only pictures he has sent me. He got them about 15 yrs ago at an estate sale in Choctaw. He said he was told 1 is a Confederate presentation sword, the other Confederate cavalry.

What markings are on the blade/ricasso; Name's of companies/manufacture, patent dates, possible other country of manufacture. If you can get pic's of these markings.

The first one is a Union NCO sword made in Chicopee, Massachusetts circa 1863 (give or take). Our family has one. My great grandfather, who fought for the Confederacy, brought one home after the war. At the base of the sword near the hilt it should read:

"MADE BY / AMES MFG CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS." (banner style), and "US / ADK / 1863

There are other sword makers that made similar swords, but if it says "Ames" that is a NCO sword.

Here is a good link:

Price varies on swords...condition, patina..etc. but the fact that the scabbard is complete is a big plus.

Not quite sure about the other one....I found this on the net while surfing

Hope this helps
