Ok watch gurus, excuse my ignorance, but I have a question. I think I already know the answer, but anyway, here goes...

What is the purpose of a GMT?
It’s a pilots watch. Allows you to set two and some times 3 time zones. Pan Am gave Rolex GMTs to their pilots in the 1950’s

I thought so. Actually, I just thought it was just for knowing the time at a different time zone/country. I didn't realize they were designed for pilots.

GMT has two hour hands that can be set for local time and another time zone.

It does get confusing though. Most highly regarded GMT Movements like the Rolex are True GMTs where it is easy to to set the primary hour hand. The Office GMTs (Like Seiko) it is easy to change the second hour hand with the arrow tip.

Thank God I'm just a dumb cop and not a pilot. That stuff is WAY over my head. :screwy:

I like GMT's. Especially useful to me if I go to visit family without my wife. Prevented me from calling too early or two late a few times! Most Casio Digitals can do that. I have three automatic GMTs, probably my favorite complication.

Most current pilots have no clue how to work a GMT. Guys in their 60’s and 70’s do. I sold a pinball to an 80 something pilot a few months ago. You could tell his GMT had definitely logged more miles than you could conceive!
