Okay youngsta, watch yo self. I went on my first deer hunt when I was 23. I went alone on my uncle's property along Kiamichi River and paddled across the river in the dark. I had built a wooden deer stand up in a tree at a bottlekneck on a lake that my family owns. I never thought about snakes or other critters getting me, just that I wanted to hunt deer. I had earned enough money working in the sporting goods dept at Montgomery Wards in Penn Square to buy a Rem 700 in .308. I had read all of the Sports Afield, Field and Stream and Outdoor Life magazines and picked the .308 because if the caliber was good enough for the military then it was good enough for me. I also knew that ammunition would be easy to find. This was the summer of 1969. 1973 was when I started to hunt deer. The flame has never been extinguished. Now a lifetime later, I farm for deer, write a column on food plot basics, write a column on managing farm ponds and lakes in another forum, have been blessed with a son who has the same passion as myself, Huckleberry 75, took you on your first elk hunt, and finally, raise funds to take children on their first deer hunt. The bones are getting old, the muscles are aching, am healing from cancer surgery, but the flame still burns bright. When I go to my final resting place and get to see my Dad again, I can honestly say " Thanks Dad, for what you have instilled in me". Roosta - I found your dang "gnats" again.
