The gene for the black and the gene for the pumpkin color are both on the X chromosome. Since a male is XY, he can only be black or pumpkin, but not a mix of the two. Other color genes are on both chromosomes, so you can see males in many different colors, but not calico.

Klinefelter Syndrome. There can be male calico's, however they are sterile, not valuable.
