Having watched some 9mm drop-in conversions work OK and a couple choke, IMHO you need a 9mm gun to get the 99.99% reliability I expect.
I nailed down a S&W engineer (who also is an IDPA match guy) regarding their M&P .40, and he said .357 is OK, but the 9mm is just enough off to be questionable.
The reason you can drop in a .40 barrel in a .357 or vice versa is they are the exact same case...the .357 is a 9mm bullet in a necked down 40 cal case all you need is the new barrel extractor breach face all the rest is the same. The 9mm is a small case with different dimensions totally...so the firing pin strike area might not match up to the primer depending on what kinda gun you have
