Last April, I purchased a Springfield 1911 from the personal collection of a man with a table there at the big show for $725 with a box of ammo thrown in. Thanks to a heaping helping of stupid on my part (which you can click here to read about), the Irving (TX) Police Department informed me that it had been stolen in Tennessee some years back. Needless to say, I was relieved of the pistol, though they did kindly return my leather once I provided proof of purchase.

All I have in the way of a record of the purchase is the check I wrote, which was payable to a man named "Rick Green." It was deposited in another state, and there the trail ends. I'm wondering if perhaps a reader of this board (maybe even Rick himself, though that may be hoping for too much) might know something about this seller and could put me in touch with him. I'm choosing to believe that he didn't know this about this history of the gun, and he'd want to, I'm sure. Also, there is that little matter of the $725 I'm out on the deal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder every time I buy a used gun where, what, who, it came from. Wish everyone had access to see if gun was stolen. It may have been sold to him 10 min prior? If you buy used you can only go by their word on the history

Thanks to a kind PM from surjimmy, I got in touch with the show's organizers, who subsequently put me in touch with Mr. Green. He has now received a copy of the report from the good folks of the Irving Police Department, and says he plans to make me whole on the deal, which is good. So thanks to surjimmy and the OSA forum.

I was doubtful and am dumbfound that you got in touch with him, but glad to hear it. I hope it ends well from here.

Just got another email from Mr. Green, and he's a good man. He'll have a table at the big show coming up in November, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.

Of course, I'll call my dad who works for the Muskogee SO and have him check the serial first, but still... :-)
