Earlier a member asked what is better between an AR and an AK. I mentioned neither, just get the FAL. Another member asked why there is not many comparisons of a .30 cal. So here we go, this is my take. I have had several different semi rifles to include HK, CETME, Saiga, PTR, M1A's, Valmet, NDM 86 (if you don't know that one look it up), AR's including a 901, and several FAL's of several configurations. This is my ONE, the best in my humble opinion......

Lets see yours!

For a one and only type rifle, you have to consider ease of maintenance and availability of parts as well as reliability. I like the LR-308/M110 pattern because I can do barrel swaps and other armory-level maintenance with tools I have in my garage... no chamber reaming, bolt lug lapping, etc... and it shares a lot of parts with the very common 5.56 variant, such as the whole fire control group, stock, gas block, gas tube, etc. I also love the adaptability and broad selection of parts, making it easy to build your ideal setup.

Good point on parts and being able to work on them. That is one of the reasons I love the FAL, it is easy to maintaine, adaptiable, and parts and tools are out there. Is it as adaptable as the AR series, I would say yes if yes because even with the AR series you have to have special tools.

I have not shot a SCAR, but since it is a brother of the FAL I don't see the need to change. Now if the SCAR used FAL mags, it would be worth a look but I like my 10-15 dollar mags over the price, if you can find them, SCAR mags.

I like the FAL. Accurate enough, easy to clean, can be broken in half if necessary to fit in a pack, etc. And in the short "para" barrel configuration, should be just the right length. Next to that would be a '91 or a quality (EBO or FMP) copy of one. The SCAR 17 looks great, but I just can't swing that kind of money, so I'm not able to put it on my list. Would love to shoot one, though.

he didnd't say "one and only RIFLE'. If that was the case, the AR in 223 would win, hands down. If I were to bother to own a .30 bore (I wouldn't) it would be a $400 Remington auto, for hunting elk (when playing by the rules) I'd get it in O6, tho, not 308. For hunting, might as well have the extra power, range and penetration offered by the larger rd. the auto softens felt recoil, it costs a lot less than M1a's or FALS. so do aR's, and AR's offer .22lr conversion units, among many other advantages. I can easily buy an AR and the Remington for considerably less money than an M1A, and I would not have to lug aroujnd all that pointless extra weight, either. :-)
