I was 2.57 miles (by GPS watch) into a short 3 mile run this morning when a large dog came barking from the front of the house I was running past around to the side and bit me I the thigh/buttocks area. I was on the sidewalk and there was a vehicle immediately beside me, so I really had no way of creating distance between myself and the dog.

Just after this a woman came from the side of the house yelling at the dog to stop barking, wanting to let it into her back yard.

I told the some woman her dog had just bit me, to which the belligerent heifer responded with an indignant "oh, he did NOT!" As there was not one comment of concern or an offer to help clean the bleeding wound, I memorized the address of the house and headed home.

Once home I took pictures, called animal control, and cleaned the bite with a surgical antiseptic. Now I guess it's just waiting to see what happens when animal control checks on the dog.

As for the dog itself, it looked to be a Dane mix and stood a little over waist high on me (I'm about 6' 2").

Does anyone have any recommendations for some good OC spray or some jogging shorts (or similar) that can support a subcompact?

I'll try to find it, but there are some companies that make a gel-type spray for cyclists. The idea is that you don't want a big mist if you've got lots of people around. The gel keeps it fairly focused.

If animal control doesn't do anything, many places require the sheriff be notified if you go to the hospital for evaluation. It's been the only way we've be able to get our sheriff to actually do anything about animal attacks since we don't have a leash law in our county.

Please remember that animal abuse is illegal and illegal activities are not allowed to be promoted here ... not even if it was meant as a bad joke ...

Edited to add: this post comes in reference to a now-deleted post that discussed a manner of dealing with the situation that fell outside of self defense. This is the reason for the reminder. Again, it has nothing to do with using a weapon to defend again a dog attack.

I just got a call from my wife, who passed the phone to am animal control officer who stopped by the house.

He asked me a few clarifying questions (what time did it happen, what did the dog look like, was it wearing a collar, what did the woman look like, etc), and said he's heading over there now.

He told me I could, at the minimum, file a complaint that the dog was not contained, which starts at a $180 fine + court costs. At most, I could file a dangerous dog complaint that would lead to the dog being confiscated, observed, and if it shows hostile tendencies it would be euthanized.
