Busier than a cat covering up schit on a hot tin roof.
Busier than a one legged man in as asss kickin contest.
In the short rows (I think referenced to picking cotton by hand, a short row looked like less work I suppose)

My older brother would always say this out loud when I was with a girl.

"have her lick it before you stick it"

other times it would be

"gotta lick it before you stick it"

The term about "getting into the short rows" is indeed a farming term. A lot of fields are irregularly shaped due to creeks, road, ponds, etc. and the final rows are often on the short side of the field, hence "the short rows".

Another term I heard often was "blowed up", meaning kinda like out of luck, etc. It was used often when we were working on something and didn't have time, parts, money, help, or whatever to finish and we would say "Well, I guess we're just blowed up". Another similar term was abbreviated "SOL" for "**** Out of Luck" when things went south.

And why do we say things "went south" when the train jumps the track instead of east, west, or north? Does "south" represent vertical down, like "gone to hell"???
