Ever since I was a teenager I've had issues with crowds, so I'm not a big mall person. But I do remember Crossroads used to be THE hangout for my peers. When I moved back to OK in 04 I was surprised to see it had gone downhill and was set to close. Crossroads and Sooner Fashion were the only two malls I went to, all the others were just too far away. Here in Tulsa I've seen the same thing happen. I moved here at the tail end of Eastland Mall's existence as a mall. Now Promenade Mall is starting to go the same route though its putting up more of a fight.

I think SPD hit the nail on the head. Amazon and other online retailers are killing the old school B&M stores. In the past 10 years I've seen store chains that I thought would never die go the way of the dodo. But, just like in the animal world, the retail world's environment is changing, some breeds will thrive, others will die off. Tis the nature of...well..nature.

Here, but occasionally There.
The wife and I tend to do our walking in malls when the weather is cold or nasty. In walking the malls and looking in the windows, I've decided that for the most part, they are selling cruddy looking stuff to put in one's residence or cruddy looking stuff to put on one's body.

No thanks to all that.

Don't forget WalMart.
WalMart is a farce compared to when Sam was alive. Every frikkin time I have to go into the store it takes me about 20 minutes to get the few items I need and 20 minutes to check out. One fellow told a joke while we were in line. He heard WalMart was closing 200 stores and that would mean 14 cashiers would be out of work.

Sears went out of business a while ago and I think it was macy's that is gone as well but it was another of the big "anchor" stores. Sears was bad off when they decided to buy K-Mart and the store closing was just a part of the initial downsizing.QUOTE]

It's the other way around. Sears didn't buy Kmart.

Kmart purchased Sears.

Found this. I was looking for the vid where the Mexican gang member got shot at Crossroads. I’ve found it before but no luck this time. Remember when the guard or cop shot the kid?

That video brings back memories. I’ve spent a lot of money on video games in that old arcade. Just before I graduated HS in 1975, they had an indoor go cart track in there.

Crossroads Mall used to be really active. It opened in the mid seventies and was THE place to go for shopping. Years later, road construction on I-35 hampered access and the businesses started losing money because customers couldn’t find their way to the mall because of all the detours. Slowly they closed one by one. The mall then became a popular place for older “mall walkers” looking for a safe place to get some exercise.

Then, the gangs started moving in, the walkers started leaving and the turf wars started. The shooting occurred when a gangster fired rounds at another gangster on the lower level west side by the stairwell near the old Arcade entrance. The shooter didn’t check his surrounding area before he shooting started or he would have noticed the OCPD officer walking down the stairwell when he started shooting. The officer took out the shooter with a head shot and the mall really declined from there.

A few years later signs went up with the name Plaza Mayor (I believe) with the intent of inviting a Hispanic customer base. I haven’t been inside since the shooting, but most recently I’ve heard advertisements of Buchanan’s Flea Market and a Gun Show in the old JCPennys store.
