I could probably call someone and get those folks in real trouble, but I’m not that guy.

Just go down there in a suit and dark glasses. Walk around with a camera and a clip board. Then dissapear.I could probably call someone and get those folks in real trouble, but I’m not that guy.
Yeah piling them into Mount Bovine isn't an approved method of disposal.
I had a customer that got in trouble for having his own bone yard on his property for dead cows that he had used for years and years. Someone saw it, called the law, and he got arrested & charged. I don't remember with what exactly, and I don't remember how it ended up, cause the guy was a prick and I didn't like him anyhow, but yeah, I don't think that's strictly legal.
Yes there are stil Govt trappers, the one up here is good, and he won't hesitate to bring in air craft if needed. They gunned down dozens one weekend not too far NW of me a couple of years ago in the hills and canyons. The kid that traps that area caught just as many that winter as he always does lol. I think the only thing that can control them is themselves and the food chain or lack of.
As Okie4570 knows, my place is pretty isolated, so I’m not all that worried about collateral damage (ie neighbor’s pets). There’s a guy hunting beside me that traps coyotes, but he’s not making a dent in the population. The cowboy at the feedlot has bragged to me about seeing 35 coyotes in a group on a cow carcass, and he said he’s not shooting them.
I’m not saying I would use a poison myself, but the sheer number of coyotes concerns me.
Yeah, I no longer shoot coyotes while deer hunting after reading Coyote America by Dan Flores and doing a deep dive.
I think most "control" amounts to futile feel good stuff. People, especially cattlemen and hunters, have an highly emotional emotional hatred for coyotes.
The guy who owns my deer lease has a small cow calf operation and man he was all excited when the government trapper said he'd come out. I forget how long he ran traps but he caught 6 (SIX!) coyotes. Boy the landowner was happy to tell us that, like 6 dead coyotes was a huge dent in the population. I'm like dude do you think coyotes breed like elephants? But you can't tell most guys that. Those 6 dead coyotes were settling an emotional score. Seems like a waste of time and resources to me. Might be a fun job though.
Flores makes the case that you can shoot/trap problem coyotes and maybe make a difference in things like calf predation, but as far as controlling the overall population...coyotes determine their own population. Like you say if there's food there will be coyotes. Then there is the evidence that killing dominsnt coyotes in one spot is just giving free real estate to more coyotes to move in. You gotta hand it to those animals. They certainly are good at thriving.
