I just watched a piece on national news about an effort to have bugler across the nation, to play Taps at 3:00 tomorrow. My wife showed me that an effort to recruit folks in area neighborhoods to join in.

I'm hoping that there will be many that will do this.

Way back when I was in high school, in Muskogee, I had the honor of playing taps for a few veterans gatherings. There was one large event at the Western Hill Lodge where two of us played, and I can still see all those grown men with tears in their eyes. That was one of my favorite memories. Wish I could join in tomorrow, but I will be listening.

So will I. Taps says it all. Those who sacrificed their lives to defend the freedom of America. I can’t ever listen to it without getting tears in my eyes.

Here, but occasionally There.
Way back in the olden days, my folks bought me a cheap plastic trumpet. One of the few songs that I learned from that book of "notes" for songs was "Taps." One of the WWII guys that was with the American Legion heard me playing that one day. He came by the house and visited with my folks and me and asked if I could play "Taps" at their Memorial Day military ceremony. So there I was, in my scout uniform, playing "Taps" at the graveside ceremonies next to a WWI soldier from our community.

I think that is when I really became interested in learning more of our country and what our veterans did for us. Our small town had a bunch of WWII vets, one of which was our "blacksmith." One day, while waiting for him to weld a part for one of our farm implements, I noticed his wooden leg and kind of stared at it. He took a break from his work and sat down to explain to me that there are occasions when one has to be prepared to defend freedom, even if it isn't our own freedom at risk, and to be prepared to make sacrifices for that freedom. His leg was part of his sacrifice.

This is a really neat idea. I just dug out my old trumpet, and there’s no way I can do it justice this year. Maybe I can get my chops back in shape for next year!
Hell just pull it out press down 1st and 3rd and hope the embouchure still works... I will play here in Hulen at 1500hrs Monday.

My son used to play in the cemetery at Tuttle for a veteran memorial and it was absolutely impossible for me to not tear up, the song, the setting (cemetery) and many old veterans gathered. Zach stood in the back of the crowd and following the final speech he would get his signal to play as everyone was completely silent at that moment. I have a video somewhere I can post
