They also closed ship traffic UNDER the bridge. That's a much bigger deal. Suez Part Deux?

The Coast Guard stopped all traffic on the Mississippi River near Memphis – between mile markers 736 and 737 – after a crack was discovered in the Hernando de Soto Bridge that spans the river, according to a statement.

There were 12 vessels with 157 barges in the queue to pass northbound and 16 vessels with 254 barges in the queue to go southbound, Lieutenant Mark Pipkin, a Coast Guard spokesman, told Reuters. The barges are carrying a mix of materials including crude oil and dry cargo like corn or rocks, he said.

Pipkin said it is not known when the river will reopen.

I don’t think the estimated time has much to do with welding up the broken support. The time will be the inspection of the bridge itself. What stresses caused this support to break? The overall integrity of the bridge is going to be confirmed before traffic is allowed to cross the bridge again.
Agree, that welding takes little time.
Agree again that the structural integrity is key to getting it open again. Something caused this and and engineers need to figure it out.

Thank God that the crack was found before the bridge failed. There’s no telling how many other braces are compromised.

Too bad we can’t sever
Every bridge
Don't forget to stop and catch a dinner roll in Sikeston MO on the way thru.
not much of a country restaurant fan. Lamberts is fun when you have kids but I’m more of a monster energy and beef jerky road trip guy
