Here, but occasionally There.
Well, as a young 74-year-old, I think I have found my niche. Wife and I are currently in South Dakota with plans to see Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, the Black Hills, Devil's Tower, and a few nice roads to drive in the Black Hills. Of course, we are taking pictures.

Coming up through Nebraska today, I got pulled over by a Highway Patrolman. I was doing 5 mph over the 65 mph speed limit. He asked me if I knew how fast I was going and I said 70. He asked if I knew the speed limit and I said 65. He then said, "well, since you are so honest, I'll just give you a warning."

We visited with him and a Sheriff's deputy that also stopped to back him up and told them that we had retired from the OSBI. So, we had a good visit and went on our merry way...

...10 miles down the road and I was back to 5 over the speed limit. Some guys never learn. I think that may be my 3rd time in 60 years of licensed driving that I was pulled over by a highway patrolman. (The other two times actually cost me, though.)

All that said, watch your driving in Northern Nebraska.

Well I'll take a stab, I had just joined the work force.....as a lot of young guys then. And it's one two three what are we fighting for??.....anyway I did notice a sea change. Gloria Steinem, and the rest of the gals were hot and heavy about getting into the work force. It seems we had "quotas and goals" for everything and every job. We had the onset of sensitivity training and all sorts of stuff. I'm not so sure that corporate thinking at the time wasn't.....if I got to do this.....I'll just pay the lowest common denominator.......then they found out with the economic down turn in those years they could get away with it!! Now mind you I am very conservative....you agreed to work for X, but this is just what I remember from time times!

Pissed me off too. We could buy raw gold at that time overseas at the fixed government prices of $38 something and have it made into "art" to get it back into the US. For some dumb reason I didn't do it.
It was against the law prior to that to own bulk gold as it was the basis for our money value. It was legal to own gold as jewelry or art work.
I know one guy that had an unbelievable amount of gold cast into a Budda statue at the $38 per oz price. Carried it back to the US. I got to pick it up before he left and it was incredibly heavy for such a small statue. 10 pounds or better. Hope he caught one of the highs.
He wasn't the only person that did that.

Ford reversed the rule on gold bullion making it legal to own again, and how the hell americans allowed that to happen at all is crazy. But all the changes that started in 1971 are likely directly linked to the complete decoupling from gold.

Actually it was against the law because that great ally of communism, FDR outlawed in during the Great Depression. He was afraid of hoarding, and it's impact on the economy.(statists will fight any competition that comes along) And he knew about Pearl Harbor before our sailors did.
