My 04 GMC sierra z71 is now smoking quite a bit when i start it in the morning. I have been told it is probably leaking valve seals. I know the fix is expensive so I am looking for options...

Additive?
shade tree mechanic that can do it cheaper?
Thoughts?

Yeah, if it only does it when you start it and then it goes away its def valve seals. Thicker oil could possibly make it smoke less, but only way to fix is replace them.....

Sorry

Just to rule it out you should probably check that your pcv valve isn't stuck. Whey they get stuck in these trucks it fills the bottom of the intake manifold with oil. You can pull the throttle body off pretty easy and see if there is any oil in the intake.

Another vote for a possible stuck or clogged PVC valve, worth checking this before spending any big money. That is if you don't have a permanent one. Remove and shake to see if it rattles, start the engine and see if it sucks. Might be worth seafoaming the engine. In the end it's likely the valve seals but worth a shot.

My 06 Sierra smokes and rattles all the time especially under hard acceleration. Course it’s a Duramax!!!
