Aviator41 and others are spot on with the twist rate info. We all talk about the fast vs slow twist rates and how they affect heavy to light bullets, respectfully. But what the twist rates actually, directly, affect is the length of the bullets. Certainly longer bullets are typically heavier than short bullets...but maybe not when you compare old style copper clad lead bullets to the new bullet designs such as solid copper or frangible bullets.

Reloading articles and ballistics articles and manuals are good sources for barrel twist rate information.

The first AR's had 1 in 12 twist rates that were for the 55gr bullets that they used.

I'm pretty sure that the first M-16,s had a 1x14" twist rate and that was subsequently tightened up to 1x12" in the M16-A1.

You are correct. The very first M16's had 1/14 twist. Later M16's and all M16A1's had 1/12 twist. Current M16A2, M16A3, M16A4, M4 and M4A1 have 1/7 twist.
