I have a buddy that says the same thing. He swears that Allen fixed blade broadheads from Walmart do a better job than most mechanical broadheads. I am starting to believe him.
I used Excalibur 150 gr Bolt Cutters for a few years but switched to Carbon Express XT4 100 grain heads a few years ago. I’ve seriously considered switching to mechanicals several time to try to achieve a better blood trail, but I keep talking myself out of it. The XT4 heads shooting so well is the real reason I haven’t switched. The last several deer I’ve shot with them haven’t bled well at the impact point, but every one has fallen within sight or under 50 yards from impact point.

Most get damaged, but I resharpened and used the same head to kill 3 deer.

We’ve had good luck either Allen’s or NAP brand from Wally World

Do you need/use different broadheads on compound vs cross bow? Undeg01 is using a hand drawn bow which is likely much slower than the cross bow. My understanding is that mechanicals work better on cross bows which is why I only use cut on contact broadheads. I would say I've had great luck with the Magnus Stinger 2 blade 100 grain heads but been so long since I killed anything with them I'm not sure now! They are a good broadhead with lifetime warranty on blades and they'll re-sharpen or send you new ones if damaged.

I'm not sure . . . I honestly haven't looked into it myself.

2 years ago I killed a buck with my compound bow using a Rage Hypodermic broad head and that thing expanded perfectly. The blood trail was very hard to miss.

Of course the buck was basically right under my stand so it was about a 5-10 yard shot.

3 years ago I dropped a doe in her tracks at about 25 yards with my cross bow using a mechanical broad head.

I bet Undeg01 has had success with them in the past too. I bent a blade on a mechanical years ago so quit using them although knowing technology has changed alot since.
Maybe I'll still get another chance for my Magnus heads still this year. Next weekend it's a Federal 150gr instead!

Leaving duck hunting today I saw a freaking monster chasing a doe on our property. I mean a MONSTER. He was going hard, hopefully they are still active on Saturday which is the next time I get to go.
Dorkus, given my hunting prowess, I can surmise that the rut on our property started yesterday afternoon as I drove through the gate to come home and expect all bucks to be worn out and resting on someone else's property by shooting light on Saturday!

I can’t answer the question about using different heads when hunting with a crossbow vs vertical bow, but if you use a fixed blade head, it’s not going to matter. When I was able to shoot a vertical bow, I used either Thunderhead 125 grainers or a Rocky Mountain head that I can’t remember the weight.
