Major shout out to @OKRuss for letting my son and I come out to his fantastic hunting property! My son shot his first deer out there this evening.

He’s 13. I’ve been loading reduced recoil 150gr loads for the 30.06 and he’s been practicing a lot this past month or two. He made an excellent shot! He was patient and didn’t shoot the first one that stepped out either. Waited for one that looked more mature. She isn’t huge, but still decent and the meat will be delicious!

Doe ran into the woods a ways after the shot, so we followed the blood trail to her. Awesome experience! Field dressed her in the woods then drug her out. Russ came with the ATV from there. Great time…

I went to my same old spot that produces the same old thing as far as does go. As I walked up to the tree I stand by a giant doe jumped out of the tall grass and started running across the field. I threw my rifle up deer was at 75 yards and getting farther away. I shot and the deer fell. When I got to it this is what I found. One of the bucks I been seeing that had already shed its horns. It kinda made me mad at first that I killed a buck that would probably be a good one next year but then I thought of all the guys that walked in and set up on me less than 100 yards away and didn’t feel so bad. I’m not sure why I didn’t get a picture of the whole deer other than I was thinking about the half mile drag uphill in 65 degree weather before he spoiled

You should’ve called one of your son in laws to come do the dragging for you, since they’re going to be happy to participate in the eating.🤣

Congrats! The buck with the drop tine I shot this year dropped in a muddy wheat field. Gutted it, made it about half way back to the truck and I was done. Walked back to the truck, called my son and said come on......promptly got on amazon and ordered a 2 wheel deer cart lol.
I have a 2 wheel cart I built but these fields were plowed a long time ago then left to grow back up in grass the sled works better for the terrain in this situation. By the time any of the boys would of got there to help I would of been back to the truck

Since I hunt by myself most of the time, I bought a two wheel foldable cart for up there and down here, but I haven’t had to use them…yet. I’m concerned about getting a deer to stay on one especially a big NW Oklahoma buck, because in my opinion, they’re sized more appropriately for an east TX yearling doe.

When we both started dragging we got about half way back to the truck from he started helping and I told him I was going to have to stop and rest. He said okay I got it the rest of the way. I said okay whatever you say. He started pulling by himself and sliding around in the mud and making about as much progress as I was without him. He said "whoa I'd never guess you were helping that much". I looked at him at told him a 475 squat doesn't mean anything when there's no traction does it? Lol

All this talk about dragging reminds of a news article out of Michigan my wife sent me, about a month ago or so. An ER doctor reported 3 men died of heart attacks within 48hrs, all dropped while dragging deer. (Separate hunters, not all 3 died together) The doctor encouraged older out of shape hunters to get checked out and be careful before pushing it too hard in the woods
