I bought a 30.06 45 years ago and have killed over 100 deer with that gun. I lost only one. Several years ago I thought I'd retire that rifle and bought a 7mm.08 - a nice rifle. I killed several deer with that gun too. I now went back to carrying the 30.06 - I just like it and have confidence in it. I shot two deer through 4" trees and got them. They were running shots and there were no problems. Any gun yo uhave that builds confidence will do you real well. I like the wide variety of ammo available. The .308 is a really good calibre for deer - almost a 30.06, smae bullet weights and diameter, etc.

Really a shame you apparently don't reload.
A 150gr Rem core-lokt and some IMR 4064 magically turns a .300 mag into a .308 balistically.
Oh yes, did I mention Remington already makes this load?
All Hunters: Most deer hunting shots are taken well within 200 yards, Managed-Recoil cartridges provide effective performance, with less than 1/2 the recoil. The result is less anticipation of recoil, better shot placement, and quicker scope recovery.

Recoil-Sensitive Hunters: For shooters that are unable to tolerate the recoil of a standard cartridge, Managed-Recoil Cartridges are the perfect solution. Effective performance with half the recoil.

Youth and Women: Managed-Recoil allows youth and women to practice and hunt effectively, with nearly the same point of aim as a standard cartridge at 100 yards. Best of all, they can use an existing gun without readjusting the scope.

I like the .308 for deer. Very accurate and you can't go wrong. Mine has become my backup gun on trips because I like the 7mm08 as much or better. Many a deer and elk have fallen to that rifle. Like it was said above, there is no magic bullet. The cool thing is you get to buy a new gun...good luck!

My Dad has used a .300 Savage for deer for a long time. His was a step up from a .250/3000 Savage. His .300 is a Remington Model 722. That gun really shoots nice.

Mine is a WWII 7.7 Jap that has been rebarreled into a .300 Savage. Not a tack driver, but will hold a 2" group at 100 yds with a 50 yr old Weaver K2 4X scope. :D

Dennis,

My Dad had a K4 on his. He gave that rifle to his Grandson, my Nephew. He is in the Navy at Virginia Beach and his house was broken into and that rifle stolen last year. Very low life when you burglarize military housing while they are deployed.

BTW - My 30.06 is a Remington Model 721.
