Man that's nice to hear i will probably stay with the 52gr then and save some powder and my shoulder lol
That 36gr, 3031 is a crazy accurate load out of my 1874 too, no trouble banging the gongs out at 600y. You can even shoot, lift your head and have time to see the splash off the gong and the dust that it brings up off the ground lol.

Recovered a hollow point from a deer this year that I took with my 45/70.
Shot was relatively close range, and it was a hot load (Ruger #1 specks).
The hollow nose of the projectile was gone, but it did not mushroom or upset much.
Perhaps as big as a 50 caliber, not much more.

It shattered ribs and cut right through a lot of soft tissue, and the animal went down withing 20 yards or so.

I have had a few go further, but not many.
