they say that
X = 3+9
48/2(3+9) = 48/2X
2X = 24
48/24 = 2

What they are doing, they are omitting the paranthesis and the fact that they imply multiplication
The proper solution
X = 3+9
48/2(X) = 48/2*X
48/2*X = 24X
24X=288

There is a reason this is considered ambiguous, because it is. It is intended to be confusing to either teach a point or to troll a forum. This has locked up a mathematics educatior forum 3 or 4 times. Even a few of their own were saying the answer is 2, but most were in agreement it is 288 as it is written.

We're working a math problem not reading a book.

The principle is the same for math and reading. Multiplication and division carry the same weight for order of operations, as do addition and subtraction, so they are done left to right. Type the problem as it is written here into a calculator, or as a function in excel, or in wolfram alpha or maple TA and it will give you 288. I know where you are coming from, I made the same mistake at first.
