I was gonna suggest building yourself something in 243. Back when I hunted, it was my go-to AR platform. Still a fun shooter, but in a 16" barrel, no telling how fast and flat it would be.
I always thought that a .243 AR would be neat but I have no desire to move into the AR-10 platform.

If I did it would most likely be the 6.5 Creedmoor that made me do it.

We’ve shot a few deer with the solid copper hollowpoints, and one with the fusion bonded sp with .223. It has done good, havent had one run more than 30 yds. But if you want to change calibers, i dont see 7.62x39 or .300 blk as any improvement over the .223 with premium ( bonded or barnes) loads. Stepping up to .308 is doubling the power level ( 75 to 150gr@same velocity). 6.5grendel or 6.8 are halfway in between (grendel is 100@2800/120@2600)- .308 velocity at 2/3 the bullet weight).., course is you want a fatter bullet the new .350 legend might be worth a look

Lol! I had just scanned that article right before starting this thread.

So are you thinking that the 7.62x39 wouldn't be much of an improvement over 5.56?

I think out in the real world it's a toss up. I really like my ar in 7.62x39. Cheap to shoot for sure.

Yes, the AR-15 platform in particular. I have no desire to move into the AR-10 platform at this time.

The reason that I have never really considered the 300 BO is that I have a 30-30 (I would just use that but a semi-auto for hogs is what I would prefer for multiple follow up shots) and I want a caliber that is not similar to what I already have.

I would be happy with a bolt gun for deer and that would definitely open things up for me but I want one rifle for both hogs and deer.

The "cheap a$$" ammo is one of the reasons I started thinking about the 7.62x39 again. I know that some people use an extended firing pin to shoot the hard primer stuff.

I really don't know if I need more than a 5.56 for hogs and deer because I haven't had a shot at either one yet with an AR but I know that I may be pushing the limits with a 75 grain bullet and I'm just looking at options.

I’ve killed a bunch of deer with a 5.56 in 55 grain soft point boat tail. Kills them just as fast as a 30-06. Don’t be scared to use it on deer.
No experience with pigs though.

I'd do a 16" grendel. Still looking at ~2600fps with 100gr Wolf. That's 1500 ft-lbs at the muzzle. You stay super sonic out to near 700 yards and have much better designed bullets to pick from.

Also, bent-dong 7.62 AR mags look dumb dumb.
