One positive thing about government prohibition of widely desirable products is that it gets people to change how they think about the nature of laws, and the moral status of breaking the law. More people need to realize that laws are not moral decrees... they are merely a threat of force by a group of people. The moral status of force depends on the circumstances in which it is used. If it is used to defend someone's rights, it is justified. If it is used to violate them, it is illegitimate. And far from having any kind of duty to obey -- rational people who value their liberty have a duty to RESIST such illegitimate laws.

If there can be said to be any positive impact from legislation that violates people's rights, it is that it gets people to question the widely-taught notion that they have a duty to obey all laws regardless of whether they are infringements on their liberty.
