Yes it was.

That 3rd digit is important. 1897 is the pump/"slide action".

If I'm remembering correctly, John Browning wanted to do the pump first but Winchester "knew best" and wanted a lever...so he set aside the pump design and made them a lever shotgun. Then 10 years later he dusted off the pump design, they brought it to market and the rest is history.

I happen to know a bit about these because my great grandpa hunted with an 1887 his entire life, and I have a fascination with John Browning designs (which these are).
