Don't care about killing it. Had to euthanize a dog 2 years ago from a rattlesnake bite and I have a curious toddler and an infant at home. Not afraid of snakes, but they all die at my house.

then why would you bother to learn what kind it is? Oklahoma has rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths for venomous. every other snake in OK is harmless.

more people get bitten while trying to kill or catch the snake than by accidentally stepping on it, so you would be better served teaching your child to avoid snakes or at least learn which ones are dangerous.

With the exception of a few coral snakes in far southeastern Oklahoma; all poisonous snakes in Oklahoma have slanted (cat eye) pupils. Any other snake with round pupils is not posionous. Again, with the exception of the coral snake.

For those who do not know. A rule of thumb to go by is, if the tail is sharp like the lead end of a pencil, it is harmless. If it is blunt like a pencil eraser stay away from it.

Better rule....If it has legs it is harmless. If it doesn't have legs stay away from it.

If it doesn't have a head, it's harmless. If it has a head, remove it or leave it alone.
