I've been using (free) Microsoft Security Essentials for almost a year - couldn't be happier with it! Has intercepted a few Trojan viruses; updates/scans on its own; no noticeable loss of performance (unlike Norton). Was very pleased to boot Norton off all my machines; not to mention the savings.

Another vote for Microsoft Security Essentials. Have been using it since it was a pay suite, was happy to see it go free to the public.

Some people hate microsoft, if you do this probably isnt for you. But if you have an open mind you may end up as pleased with it as I am.

I have worked in the IT field before and my sister is an IT person at Tinker. I personally use kaspersky. It is great. To me it is the best anti virus software that money can buy. Very friendly user interface and superior protection. Avast is fine but not the best, nor is Norton. And I have used both. Most free anti virus software will not pick up on every virus that is out there. The databases need to be updated often and most free versions don't have a broad enough database to cover you fully. But to each his own. Just my opinion.

I bought a laptop with Avast on it last summer and then later changed over my 2 home PCs, one of which is a computer I just use in my studio for recording, and both of my other 2 laptops. So far have had no problems with any of them.
