Is it taught in public schools anymore? But that might depend on the school district, state or whatever.

Arguably, no. A civil war is a fight for control of the existing government; what we call the Civil War was more akin to a revolution, the South trying to separate itself from the existing government, not subsume it.

Kinda like 1776.
