If it were me and I wanted to stay with an XD to appendix carry, I would go with a XDs. Thinner is better for appendix.
Kydex is tough on me unless I'm just going to the local shitt and git. Leather for all day comfort my friend. This is from a guy whose waist size is still smaller than his inseam so take it for what you think it's worth.

I’m currently appendix carrying a Smith 649 j frame in kydex, and it works for me. I used to carry at 4 oclock on my right side, but it started giving me back/pinched nerve issues. I haven’t had those problems since I started carrying appendix.
