AR type rifle for my son question

So my son turns 14 in January. I'm considering getting him an ar-15 type rifle that he can build up over the years. My problem is every gun show and magazine has a different flavor. Does anyone have suggestions on a good starter model? Something modern that would be a good base to work from.

And before anyone gets their panties in a bunch. yes the gun will stay in my safe most of the time.
