Years ago some big importer sold FN-FAL's in the US. After many were sold to retailers,they were found to be select fire. The ATF scrambled to track them down. I know this because a friend with a FFL had two of them.
These are legal, some FAL's have a third selection and it will go to it but it will not fire automatic. Some of these had safety sear installed. Firing the gun in this position will cause it to lock up with a live round chambered. its like shooting an AR with no disconnector...it will only result in a lock up of the gun. That is not a machine gun.
To McShooter. Maybe I wasn't clear. The rifles I'm talking about were select fire. They would function in full auto. That's why the ATF called my friend to see if he saw that these guns would go full auto and if he changed the parts so that they would only go semi-automatic. They also wanted to know what he did with the full auto parts.
