When LBJ signed the Gun Control Act of 1968 he was hoping to have created a registration of all guns, thankfully it failed. They continue to attempt to take away your guns. Red Flag laws are the new end-around attempt to bypass due-process and confiscate all of your firearm and never give them back to you. Remember to teach your grand-kids real American history and the liberties we are slowly loosing. Remarks Upon Signing the Gun Control Act of 1968. | The American Presidency Project

Take your research back just a bit more.
Look into the ‘34 nfa hearings in Congress, specifically the testimony of the NRA president at the time. (Glad that guy is werm food now, is it just me or does he really need company)

After that look into the first case that challenged it, U.S. v Miller I think it twaz. Believe it started over the line in good ol Mo. “Treasury Agents”
Give a hint, that law stands on a decision made on a shotgun that the first trial judge ran the U.S. prosecutors out the door due to the weakness of their case.

Federal controlled items are another box canyon you can't get out off. If you try to do the legal thing with suppressors, short barrels etc. the weapon is now registered. The law abiding citizens are on a potential confiscation list, and the 'illegals' get to keep theirs because they are not on a government list...and they probably also pay cash for ammo. Hmmm...almost enough to make a good man start walking the wrong way...
