I've done it a few times but they always open the unit and let you see what's inside. You can't move things around and you can't enter the unit but usually they go cheap and it's worthless junk inside. You might make a few bucks or find a treasure in a box but think about it... if someone was leaving good stuff there, they would have just paid for the unit instead of letting it get sold off.

Co-workers husband does this on occassions and he has made some good money at it. He got one unit that was full of stuff that someone was moving and got a couple of flat panel tv's, game stations and computers.

Sure he had to sell the stuff and the furniture, but donate it to goodwill and use it as a tax write off at the end of the year for your taxes.

It will end up on TRU TV. Its fake fake fake. No way will they leave the renters lock on the door until auction time. Also they would never win any of the auctions with a cam crew there. I didnt like the 2 ******* myself.

I've talked with the manager of my storage facility about it and he said that he has seen motorcycles, tools, lawn mowers, guns, etc. He also stated that he has seen showdowns when people show up after or during the auction w/o money wanting their stuff back. I was also told that a lot of the delinquent rooms are due to oversees military personnel, people that are in prison,etc...

I watched one episode.
They found a small safe and decided to use a plasma cutter to open it up.
There were some papers inside (burned to ashes) and an Hk P7 that they partially melted in the process. They still got a dealer to give them some money for it anyway.

Idiots. I'll never watch another episode.

My wife is the manager of a storage facility, Most of the units that they sell at auction are junk, sometimes some decent stuff. The rest of the story is you buy it for even a dollar then you own ALL the contents and the deal is you have to remove everything and clean out the unit afterwards. I did see one guy buy 7-8 units at one location for one dollar each and spent two weeks cleaning out the junk and all he found worth anything was a kinda expensive coin left in an old jewelry box, It was worth about 50 bucks. I don't think he got a good deal overall! But sometimes there could be a deal?

I saw that. It was, without a doubt, the dumbest thing I have ever seen on TV from "professionals".

I've been to few storage auctions... there are two types in Tulsa... One is where they sell off the rights to the junk in the whole unit and the other is where they sell the stuff off like a regular auction. The regular auction one has a twist that no boxes could be opened before sale. I was told by one of the auctioneers that was the law.... (who knows) The best storage auctions are put on by the moving companys. They store whole households for people... it actually kinda sad...

If you watch the newspaper you will see the storage auctions listed when they have one. I think the law states they have to advertise.

I suspect the storage owners has gone thru the contents of each unit looking for "good stuff". I have heard the stories of people who purchased units and found treasures. One guy claimed he found a .45 Auto in one....

They can come pay the back rent up until the start of the auction.
If you go to an auction and they are not cutting the locks off then the storage people have already gone thru it and took the good stuff.
