Very interesting. I am shopping barrels for a Savage-based build, and have been leaning toward a light or medium Palma, or something similar.

That 6mm read got me thinking of a 1:8 twist barrel in something to use the 105 gr berger

I run a 26" MTU Bartlein barrel on my 7wsm and really like it except for the weight. It will shoot 1/2 MOA or better with just about any reload. Cleaning is also a breeze.

I've got a 6.5mm Benchmark in medium Palma just waiting to be built. Surgeon wouldn't build it with that barrel.

Why not? I've got a Bartlein Medium Palma .260 REM built on a custom 700 by LongRifles Inc.

They said they are rigid about using Bartlien or Krieger. It's not like I tried to get them to build a rifle with a used DPMS barrel. I mean, Benchmark is good stuff.

does anyone have any input as to how taper comes into play, other than weight? is it primarily a harmonic/stiffness thing? or just a weight thing? thanks.
