Beware, Honobia WMA is Having Parts Leased

I posted about this in the Oklahoma Hunting Forum, but for those who don’t venture there I have some unfortunate news:

To put it as brief as possible - My place borders and is surrounded by the Honobia WMA. Last week I met a nice gentleman who informed me that he leased the small 30 acre plot that sits next to our ranch gate. That seemed odd to me as it is WMA...but I wasn't complaining because he's a bowhunter and I'm just glad I don't have to worry about someone shooting a rifle in the direction of my house.

I speak with my local game warden frequently because I do a lot of thermal hunting at night. I asked him via text message if it were possible to have part of the WMA leased and off limits now (Honobia WMA is comprised of three timber companies' lands).

His answer was "yes", and that they've been doing a bit of this lately.

Just be forewarned if you plan on hunting this way this year. What used to be your honey hole, may be on someone's lease now.

Did the ODWC sublease it to someone or is it leased from the timber companies? If the ODWC subleased it, that is just plain wrong and against the interest of the public land hunters.

No. The ODWC leased it from the timber companies, and charges a yearly fee for access. A sub-lease of sorts.

As of right now, you'll still pay the ODWC fee ($40/resident), but might not have access to the same spot you hunted last year.

There is a ~3K acre spot down the road for lease by Hancock for ~$23K...lol
