Received this e-mail today from TargetSportsUSA.com.

I will admit that I read in another forum that they played this game. Now I know for sure to stay away from them:

You got the email today. When did you place the order for the ammo? If placed before, say, Dec 14-16th, then i say funny business is going on. If you ordered in the last 2 weeks then, like others said, their inventory is just messed up due to the larger than normal volume they are doing.

On the CC auth issue. We rent construction equipment. We take 100% of the total bill as an authorization until the equipment comes back the. The authorization is applied to the remaining balance due. Not an uncommon practice.

In the credit card industry there are two types of actions that an e-commerce type business can make when they have your credit card data.

Authorizations - This action is basically when the merchant goes through the credit card network and asks the financial institution that issued you your card, if your card has enough money on it for the charge it wants to send to it.

Capture - This action is where the merchant actually send the request to have money transferred from the financial institution that issued you your card to them.

So it's not an uncommon business practice at all. This happens every day to most people, but most people don't ever pay much attention to all the "pending" charges that show up in their daily online credit card statement.

For those that want to nerd out, you can read all about it here http://www.paymentsgateway.com.au/what-you-need-to-know/payments-gateway-authorization-and-capture
