Access to a rural road during the afternoon commute has some homeowners in Osage County in a dispute with the Tulsa area’s cycling community.

Former world champion cyclist Chris Carlson considers the Tulsa area - and specifically a stretch of Shell Creek Road just north of Sand Springs - crucial for training future stars of his sport.

"There's riders, pretty accomplished riders, that have grown up doing that ride (through that road)," Carlson told 2 News. "At its biggest times, (there are) maybe five, 600 people (riding the route)."

However, if several residents along the road get their way, the hundreds who go on intense "Wednesday Night Rides" will be banned Monday by the Osage County Board of Commissioners from riding Shell Creek Road on weekdays from 4-7 p.m..

One homeowner in favor of the restriction messaged 2 News saying the bicyclists are disrespectful, and mentioned instances of littering, blocking road access on purpose, and even a rider stopping to urinate in public.

Carlson doubts that last complaint, and claims it's rare for riders to leave trash.

"I mean it's not a bunch of hooligans (riding). It's doctors, lawyers, business owners, police officers, firefighters, old and young(people)," Carlson said.

2 News heard from five different people who live near Shell Creek Road April 6 who shared similar stories off-camera.

One angry volunteer firefighter said he worries that he might have to respond to a crash involving riders any day.

Carlson admitted there is some merit to these claims.
He said he's been collaborating with other cycling leaders to lay ground rules and wants to work with law enforcement.

"It does not make me feel good to know I have upset people doing what I love doing," he said. "There are things that the cycling community needs to do in the way of adherence to applicable law, and there's things the sheriff can do to kind of help with it."'

Carlson hopes the Osage County Board of Commissioners don't approve restricting access to the road and that locals give cyclists another chance.
"If you can ban bikes on Shell Creek (Road), you can ban bikes on a lot of roads," he said. "And that just doesn't seem to me to be a good thing."

The board will discuss and potentially vote on the policy on April 8, at 10:00 a.m.

We have to deal with them out here in Hectorville area too. Running stop signs, weaving all over the road making it difficult to pass and stopping on the side of the road to urinate. And now I guess it`s illegal to honk at them but if they`re all over the road I honk anyway. It`s a shame they can`t use the miles of bike trails in Tulsa...

Tag and license bike riders like we do autos and motorcycles, then build them a separate bike lane off the road where they can ride side by side all day long.
YES.. even the bike lanes say 'SHARED PATH!", so let them share the cost of thousands and thousands of $$ that the motoring public has paid for. Then they still insist on riding on the roads and over the White Fog Line, SIDE X SIDE. They need to share the cost by License Tags, Insurance, and a Hwy /City Use fee, non motorized fee, and make the Damn STROBE light illegal. They blind us older drivers!

This needs to be what is done. Bicycles do not belong on the road with automobiles.

They cannot maintain speed, they hinder traffic, disregard the rules of the road, and rarely ever move over. I agree that if they wanna ride on the road, they need to be licensed and insured like everything else.

They need to make designated lanes like sidewalks just for them. I remember this when I was a kid in Germany.
Even after I blow my horn they still refuse to move over. Click on the picture and watch & Listen.

We’re already taxed enough .
Have you ever been on a bike path ? I’m assuming not because you would be aware that they are full of toddlers in strollers, parents wearing earbuds , old timers also wearing earbuds doodlebugging around and dogs on leashes. Kids on bikes weaving all over the place

“Bike paths” are more hazardous to cyclists than the roads are in most cases.

The DMV grants us permission to use the roads , and to use the full lane if need be unless otherwise marked. The reason you see cyclists using the travel lane even when there is a shoulder is because the shoulder is where all the glass, debris and crap that falls off cars is located, And most of us cyclists who’ve been doing this any length of time Have felt the pain Of getting smacked with a mirror or worse, When they tried to Scooch over as much as possible to be courteous
