Vice President Biden lashed out at the NRA and made a clear but implicit dig at Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) Wednesday for blocking a key provision of the proposed Senate universal background checks bill, saying it would gut the legislation of its teeth.

Though Biden didn’t mention Coburn by name, it was clear that the Oklahoman bore the brunt of his ire for insisting in the bipartisan Senate gun control talks that no records be required for private gun sales.

Biden’s remarks represent the first public frustration from the White House about the state of the Senate gun talks, which to this point he and Obama have described as constructive efforts with bipartisan support.

“The proposal they’re arguing as they mark up the legislation in the United States Senate are so porous that they are going to allow a truck to be driven through the holes in the legislation they are proposing, loaded with tens of thousands of weapons,” Biden told a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General.

“For example, they come up with a system where there’s a new version of an instant check system where you go online and check if you’re qualified and then you go to the buyer in a private sale,” Biden continued. “But guess what? They want the law to say no record would be kept. How in the hell would you know if that transaction would be real if no record can be kept?”

Though Coburn and Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) are close to reaching an agreement on background checks, the records issue has now stalled the talks for nearly two weeks. Gun control groups have become frustrated and have begun searching – as has Manchin – for other GOP senators who have credibility with the NRA to join them. The NRA has maintained that extending an existing requirement that gun sales be kept by federally-licensed dealers to private citizens would be a step toward a federal gun registry, which existing law already prohibits.

Coburn's office did not immediately respond to Biden's remarks.

Biden’s address to the attorneys general comes as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg made the rounds at the Capitol, meeting with Sens. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), John McCain (R-Ariz.) Kirk, among others. Bloomberg and Biden are to meet at the White House at 1 p.m.

I don't like the idea of Senator Coburn even sitting at the negotiation table with these guys, with or without records it still won't have any effect on criminal access to guns.

In my opinion, there should be no bipartisan support. We should have representatives that fight for our rights, not compromise. There's enough rules and regulations, just enforce what we already have.

I think the above mentioned way of performing background checks should be how current checks are performed. Gun stores should check your name against a list and more information should only be required if your name matches one on the list. Once it reaches the point you aren't on the list (SSN, DL#, DOB... doesn't match) then you can buy right then and no records are kept other than the records kept when any other product is sold. I like civilians having access to that list for private sales, but I think it should be voluntary and still don't think the federal government has any constitutional authority to force background checks on private sales or transfers within a state.

And one other thing, I think with a list like this we should be able to go to any state and buy a gun and then bring it home. If you aren't on the list then you aren't on the list and it shouldn't matter where you buy a gun. They should even allow you to be checked out online and have the gun shipped to you directly (signature required of course).

I still want to know what Schumer and Co. are offering our side in exchange for UBC's during these super-secret deliberations. You know, in the name of "compromise"? :rolleyes2

I agree 10000% It is not a "compromise" if the other side does not concede something as per Merriam Webster.

Definition of COMPROMISE
1
a : settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions
b : something intermediate between or blending qualities of two different things
2
: a concession to something derogatory or prejudicial <a compromise of principles>
