philanthropist Robert F. Smith's pledge to eliminate up to $40 million in student loans underscores a growing burden on student borrowers nationwide.
He pledged to eliminate the debt of all students at Morehouse college carrying a student loan.
Bravo to him! What a great gift to a graduate.
He is receiving accolades as he well deserves from across the world. He contributed one million dollars to the college awhile back for a park and some other issues.

But is there a dark side to this?
What about the students that worked their way through college accumulating zero debt?
What about the parents that sacrificed all their lives to generate enough money to send their kid/kids to college so they didn't have student debt?
So this guy is going to forgive the debts of those that took out incredible amounts of money for classes that can't get them a job in the real world, just wanting the college life experience?
If I were the responsible student at this school, I'd be very angry right now.

They seriously need to evaluate the college courses and limit the majors for how many jobs that major provides. Also, trade schools need to be promoted more.

I thought the same thing. It’s admirable that he helped these kids and is likely a good thing in some cases. But, what about those that busted ass working multiple jobs or parents that sacrificed to put their kids through college without significant debt? Their accomplishment seems more meaningful to me and of the character that I hope will be the future of our country. I’m guessing that some of those who got bailed out of their loans will be working for the others at some point.

Oh, I'm not pissed. I think the guy did an honorable thing and I applaud him for it. The facts say the the all male college that is predominately black has 80% of the students carrying a student debt and if the student goes on to graduate studies, or goes to work, it makes no difference. Debt gone.
I'm just thinking if I were one of the 20% of students that worked their way through school or whose parents scrimped and saved to get me there and don't get a dime, I'd be pissed.

I wouldn't say I'm pissed or that he did a terrible thing, just kinda throwing money at a problem without trying to fix it properly. Kinda like spitting on a fire and saying you helped.

It isn't me, so I really don't spend too much time worrying about it. We don't even have the details yet, and I'm not even seeking them out. Arrangements may be made to pay tuition for the injured parties , but it may happen without my notice. BTW, there's nothing more American than borrowing money. Even white people do it.

I'd be pissed off if I had to spend money, and all I got was an education.
