Sounds good, I'll have to research what it takes to get a persimmon seed to germinate, thanks.

When you do find out, let me know.
We have 12 persimmon trees in the yard, so I've gathered seeds in the past and planted them. None ever sprouted. Guy that runs the nursery told me you have to get the outer hull off, so we tried removing it with fine sandpaper. Same negative results.
With As many seeds they drop, you would think the world would be covered in persimmon trees. There has to be a trick to it.

The (3) mechanical scarification is the one we tried with the sandpaper. I didn't have any finger prints for awhile. lol.
They also suggested acid to break down the outer layer. We didn't think of acid, but since every critter in the woods loves persimmon fruit, it has to be the way that the trees spread, and they are always in groves. Its rare to find a single tree.
We wondered if the animals spread the seeds in their poo, with the stomach acid breaking down the hard shell?

With that in mind, we find animal poo containing the seeds around our trees all the time in the fall, so we might collect some, put in a wet paper towel inside a zip lock bag, and see if they will sprout.

Edit: I don't have a clue how that pic got in my earlier post, and I can't delete it.

I thought , maybe you were suggesting putting them in the "spares"???

My Grandfather was from Ponca, retired from Conoco refinery, he would take me to the lake to see if the persimmions were ripe......yep, I was the tester ..LOL

If theres not at least 3 wrinkles on them Dont take a bite

In the 28 plus years I worked full time out of OSU and for the same company I stayed in OK, main reason was for my aging parents. The company was/is HQ'd in Austin, MN. Now that should say something. Corporate was/is in iceland (not so much iceland but snow forever and salt on the streets, if you will. I never wanted to climb that corporate ladder and live my life there. All there had old clunkers they drove in the winter time from November to April for the most part to and from work.

I bought a 4x4 truck after fighting my Trans Am through the 2011 snowmageddon. Barely had crap since. I want to use my 4wd damnit. Actually HAVE to use it!

During that I was down in Lawton with a nearly killer staph infection. . . my wife was driving around in an 04 neon and having a blast. Saw pickups trying to get going and just spinning wheels, then when it came to stopping they were sliding through intersections. Chains really make a difference when you happen to have a set. Plus those 4X4's get going a bit better than a two wheel drive vehicle but the braking system is the same on each.

As far as starting a cutting on a tree the best way may be to wrap a wet paper towel or piece of cloth around a small branch. Wrap that with plastic and then secure with zip ties. Every so often go out and inject a little water into the cloth or towel to make sure it stays moist. After a month or so you should start to see root growth, only then would you remove the cutting from the parent tree. You could go so far as to put some soil on the cloth or paper towel for nutriment or add some fertilizer to the water.
