I'm kinda confussed here, the TSA site says the backscatter AIT uses a narrow, low energy Xray beam that scans the surface of the body at high speed. How is that backscatter radiation when you getting hit with it directly? Since it uses an x-ray machine, are the operators "carded"? The radiographer at the hospital passed the state safety test.

I searched the NRC site without any luck trying to find info on the backscatter scanners.
