I'm gonna be Captain Obvious with this but whatever you've got, make sure everybody knows how to use it.

Paper map for backup. Does everybody know how to read and use a map?

Fire starting materials. Make sure everybody has actually tried and succeeded in starting a fire with that gear beforehand.

Portable radio, etc. Y'all won't believe this but make sure everybody knows how to change the batteries or charge it up if needed.
Steel wool and a 9V battery for fire starting. Keep them separate until needed or you will start fires you don't want.

I used to have a couple backpacks with some clothes, towels, etc in a couple places Incase something happened to the house and we lost all our belongings. I went through them a while back and I need to update them. These were not bags for bugging out to the wilderness for survival and combat. Every one should have something in case of evacuation, weather related events, house fire, etc. Bug out bags doesn't have to be for running to the hills to try and eek out feeding yourself and fighting off zombies. Too many people read too much what if crap on the survivalist forums

Exactly. My family has made something of this "competition" that I never intended.

My bag has a change of warm clothes, cell phone battery backup, 1st aid kit, some cash and copies of important documents, a few other things, and most importantly a set of spare car keys. If the house is on fire we may not be able to get to the keys where they normally hang.

I'm not planning on living in the wilderness. I'm going to be as comfortable as possible.

These may seen elementary to many of us but consider. Students today are not taught how to write in cursive. I was surprised to learn that when I handed a nephew a Christmas gift list and he gave me that look. So the map thing is a good one.
Come to think of it. My will is in cursive. Will my kids be able to read it?
Cursive is a massive waste of time, and most people write it illegible regardless.

Rome conquered the known world with Block Capital Letters.
