I witnessed an Elk hunt in Wyoming, ahunter shot a spike bull in the frt left shoulder and basically blew its leg off with no penetration. We chased him all over the mountain for hours until we could finish him off. He had been shot with a Nosler ballistic tip out of a 30 06, it had just blown up..
I have used Barnes X bullets to good effect on Elk, usually dont recover one because of the pass through. I have had good luck with 180 grn Speer Grand Slams, they usually retain %80. My last loads for 338 were Nosler 230 grn white tips that performed well....
