get on craigslist and look under barter and under auto parts and facebook as I have heard has really great deals.
I see cheap cars in those places often.
Or go to an auction.
Arrow wrecker service and Puckets both in okc have auctions all the time and I have bought dozens of vehicles from both places for way under 1K.
You can get on a mailing list with them or even go in and get a list of the cars they will have on the auction block.
Arrow wrecker got to know me all too well and would call me and ask if I was coming to the auction when they had a Nissan/Datsun Z car.

I bought a car for 2000 about a year ago. A slightly older car, and 98 Toyota, but with only 148000 miles, nice clean interior and mechanically solid, I couldn't say no.
I just got a running/driving 2000 LeSabre for 1200 with 165k miles owned by an old lady. Those GM 3.8L V6’s are great for the $$. It had an oil leak and will need the intake/valve cover gaskets replaced. It’s doable for about $150 if you are decent at wrenching and can follow YouTube videos. Found on FB marketplace.
Ive got a 2005 honda element. Burns oil, leaks power steering fluid, has a code because the cat was involuntarily deleted by some crackheads. But it starts, runs and drives good. Id take 1k for it.
