Does anyone know if standard (i.e. non smartphone) AT&T service only operates on the non-3G part of the network?

The reason I ask is because I have an old basis service NON-smart phone that I was keeping on a second line with the $9.99 basic plan. I thought I would try and see if I could switch the SIM to an old BlackBerry Curve of mine and make it work there. It does work for phone calls and texts (I have data disabled and no plan to use it) but it shows up as "EDGE" on the screen. Is this normal? Is it a problem? Any other thoughts?

Thanks much!

That is normal. EDGE, 3G, 4G, LTE are for data transfer only. The system for the calls and texts are the same basic system that's been working since GSM came out in 2003.

As long as you don't try to use a TDMA phone you're good to go.

Sweet. Thanks much. I just wanted to make sure that it will function as normal and still work on all advertised areas of the AT&T network without picking up some roaming charge if those even still exist. I can't really call AT&T about it though because they'll try to say have to have a BlackBerry plan even though all I'm doing is making it easier to text and using the internal functions of the phone. This is a pre-WiFi phone so I can't even access Internet that way, but I like having the other options and ability to use it for a car phone and MP3 player as well.
