I put in an order for one of these on Wednesday, so in a few weeks we'll see if I get one to show off. I've got a 1942 SA Service grade in 30-06 that I love. I thought the new production barrel/stock in a more modern cartridge would make a fun shooter.

I've read that these .308 chambered rifles are a little more forgiving on which ammo you can feed them safely. Anyone have any experience with .308 Garands? Specifically with those equipped with a new production barrel?

https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/m1-garand/

EXPERT .308 GRADE RIFLES will feature a NEW, Commercial-Production Stock Set and a NEW Commercial-Production barrel chambered for .308 Springfield. Bore condition will be “as new”, and barrels will gauge “as new”.
SPRINGFIELD (SA) or HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON (HRA)RECEIVER
The balance of parts on EXPERT Grade Rifles will match all service grade criteria, showing less wear and a better cosmetic appearance than a Field or Rack Grade. Cosmetic condition will be good to very good. Rifle finish may vary, exhibiting normal wear and/or color variation among the metal parts. May have some visible pitting, frosting, or other minor cosmetic deformity on the metal parts.

You can always order and aftermarket “ high volume” gas plug for it.. one of my Secnav trophy rifles is a .308 nm, but all ive shot out of it is ball.. i would think the .308 would be more forgiving.. but i dont know that for certain

They are good rifles in 308 or 30-06.

You don't need to worry about aftermarket snake oil gimmicks as these rifles safely handle any ammo just fine.

Ensure they are properly greased and the oprod spring is at least 19.5" long and you will have no trouble.

I had a bm59 (308 Garand) for awhile and it didn't cycle properly with ANY Ammo I ever used. Cheap, expensive, didn't matter. Run it wet, run it dry. Didn't matter. Ron from smith industries offered to help me but then withdrew the offer when he realized he didn't do the original work. (We didn't get along to say the least, guy was a pompous d*ck)

I sold it and had an AR-10 for awhile instead. Got tired of the ammo prices for 308 during that time so I sold that too

Now ammo is somewhat more affordable and I want another AR-10

😆
