I had plans to attend the DSC convention in Dallas this week. I wanted to visit with outfitters regarding a hunt, either in Alaska or Africa next year. Since I would be driving in from out of state, I wanted to check and see if it is legal to carry inside the Dallas Convention Center. With just a bit of research, I found that, indeed, it is legal for those with a license to carry within the building, however, I also found out that DSC has posted 30.06 signs at the convention entrance in past years. Not wanting to make the trip and find out I have to leave my handgun in the convention center parking lot, I contacted DCS and received the following response:
Due to this policy, I no longer plan to attend the event and will not spend one cent in support of this organization. It is hypocritical for an organization to claim support for firearms rights and then ban the exercise of those rights at their own convention. Apparently, they are the "Jim Zumbo" of conservation organizations.
DALLAS SAFARI CLUB CONVENTION 2015 “TRADITIONS”
FIREARMS / AMMUNITION POLICIES AND PROTOCOLS
No concealed carry is permitted anywhere within the convention hall, except by licensed law enforcement officers.
No live ammunition is permitted anywhere within the convention hall, except as permitted for licensed law enforcement officers. Any live ammunition possessed in violation of this regulation must be immediately removed from the convention hall or it will be confiscated.
All firearms within the convention hall must be disabled and secured by a trigger lock, cable guard, heavy duty zip tie and/or barrel plug, except as permitted for licensed law enforcement officers.
Only authorized exhibitors are permitted to possess firearms within the convention hall, except as permitted for licensed law enforcement officers. In the event any attendee attempts to enter the convention hall with a firearm, for business purposes or otherwise, admission will be refused UNLESS they have permitted business involving that firearm with an authorized exhibitor. In such case, the firearm must be declared and checked by law enforcement at the entrance to insure that the firearm is unloaded, disabled and secured; the exhibitor will then be contacted to meet the attendee at the entrance of the convention hall, and the exhibitor must take physical possession of the secured firearm and take the firearm and attendee to the exhibitor’s booth. If the attendee is also to leave with the firearm, the exhibitor must physically take the firearm to the exit of the convention hall and must deliver it back to the attendee outside the exit.
All exhibitors and attendees must comply with all other applicable firearms laws.
Failing to comply with any of these regulations will subject the violator(s) to removal from the convention hall and exclusion from the convention, and other criminal or civil penalties provided by law.
Due to this policy, I no longer plan to attend the event and will not spend one cent in support of this organization. It is hypocritical for an organization to claim support for firearms rights and then ban the exercise of those rights at their own convention.
