I love those old 'slab side' M-16's....perfect, simple rifle to throw in a cruiser, especially since the price is right.

(I need to get off my duff and build a replica for old time's sake. Wonder if anyone makes new lowers that match that profile...)

A couple of finer points:

2) These weapons were surplused by the military for a reason and that's not likely to be just because they had too many. Barrel condition is not likely to result in optimal accuracy unless these went through a depot-level maintenance/re-build cycle prior to being place in the LESO pool.

Not necessarily, the rifles could be in excellent shape... even new ones that have been in storage some where. The military does some dumb things in declaring surplus and in using up its budget at the end of the physical yr so it will get at least as much or more the next yr from Congress.

I once did live fire on some old jeeps at Fort Sill... where the jeeps had brand new tires mounted on them the night before. The tires still had the paper tags and blue dye on them...they had never been used. I was told that the Fort had to get rid of its current inventory so they would get at least as much money in the upcoming yrs budget for tires as they had the yr before. We were practicing with live LAW rockets at $5,000 a pop and shooting hundreds of M-203 grenades just to use up the inventory.... instead of using the much cheaper training rounds. We also blew-off tens of thousands of 5.56 rounds. And melted down some barrels on several M 60 machine guns going through ammo on the range..... all to eat up inventory in order to help justify a larger budget for the new calendar yr.

Several yrs ago at Altus Air Force Base, the military had declared a number of the base housing units for demolition to make room for new homes. But allowed contractors to install new cabinets, plumbing and lighting fixtures in the old units before they were demolished. Crews ended up hauling all that new stuff to the dump. Just so the contractors could get their money on contracts they hadn't finished before the homes were condemed.

There has been cases where the military spent hundreds of millions of dollars building up bases.. knowing full well that the bases were going to be closed a yr or two later.

So don't be surprised at what might happen with military surplus sales. I've seen basicly the same thing at the county & state level too. For example, a $3,000 metal cutting band saw sold for $150 at surplus. All it needed was a $50 part to fix it.

I will say it again too many people rationaliize civilian law enforcement should be special and it's bs. It's a job they have chosen to do. Civillian LE agencies should be held to the same civillian rules on title 2 firearms.

I m not cop bashing, I know former officers and current officers one I even consider a friend. But guess what at the beginnig of the day everyone of us puts our pants on the same way we are all humans regardless of job, color, or poliitical affiliation.

You know how people will argue that LEOs need these weapons to be able to match what BGs have on the street? Well, I think I should have every bit as good of a weapon as any LEO, serviceman, etc.

I agree. The intention of the second amendment was to arm the citizens to take down a corrupt government and we can't do that if we're out gunned.
