The internet has pretty much desensitized me, but I used to occasionally read a board that had a "confessions" thread. The OP set up an email address and had people email him their stories from a throwaway yahoo or gmail account, and he would post them anonymously. It wasn't so much the stories, but the sheer volume of them that made me realize that stories like that are probably a shared reality for a huge percentage of the population. Some of them were, to be cliche, things you could not make up if you tried.
